A smoke detector success story

Posted: March 31, 2023

Fire Chief Steve Klotz recently joined Tinley Park resident Tyler Orloff in a video to discuss the importance of fire safety and how working smoke detectors can save lives. Tyler knows firsthand, as he was able to escape a fire at his home last week thanks to a working smoke detector.

Watch the video at the link below to learn more. Remember:

  • Most fire deaths happen in homes with no working smoke detectors. Protect the ones you love by installing and testing your smoke detectors.
  • Be sure your home has a smoke detector on every floor, inside every bedroom, and near every sleeping area to protect you while you sleep.
  • Push the test button on every detector. It's working if it makes a loud noise when tested.
  • If your smoke detector chirps, it needs a new battery. Protect your family and replace the smoke detector battery now!
  • Smoke detectors do not belong in kitchens. If your detector beeps when there is no fire, move it at least 10 feet away from any cooking area.
