The Tinley Park Fire Department offers many public outreach events, including CPR Training, the Fire Extinguisher Training Program, the Fire Safety Smart program, school visits and the annual Fire Prevention Month.

School Visits
The Tinley Park Fire Department conducts fire safety visits with Tinley Park schools with children in kindergarten through second grade. School visits begin in the fall in coordination with Fire Prevention Week. A Public Education representative makes children familiar with the gear a firefighter wears and discusses fire safety tips such as "Stop, Drop and Roll" and "Crawl Low in Smoke." Visits lead into the third grade program, "Fire Safety Smart" (see below), which teaches fire safety to children in the community.

Fire Safety Smart
The Fire Safety Smart program is designed to engage third-grade students attending school in the Village of Tinley Park. A Tinley Park Fire Prevention Public Education Officer visits each classroom monthly from October through April. Each month has a specific topic designed to engage students and assist them in understanding hazards and how to prevent them. Lessons that students learn include:

  • Match and lighter safety
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
  • Fire behavior
  • Exit drills in the home
  • Electrical safety
  • Scalds and burns
  • Severe weather and emergency preparedness
